NFL Mock Draft Edition 4 (Combine Edition)

1. Houston Texans Blake Bortles, QB Other Possibilitiy: DE Jadeveon Clowney

Blake Bortles

Rumors are swirling the Texans like Bortles here and it does make a lot of sense. Bortles has more potential than Bridgewater but is still more durable than Manziel and is a pro-style quarterback something Bill O'Brien needs.
2. St. Louis Rams Greg Robinson, OT Other Possibility: OT Jake Matthews
The Rams have an interesting situation here with the second pick. They should go offensive line, especially tackle (and Robinson is the best available) but they also need some more playmakers to surround Sam Bradford with like Sammy Watkins.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars Jadeveon Clowney, DE Other Possibility: QB Teddy Bridgewater
Clowney made waves earlier today when he ran an impressive 4.53 40, faster than most quarterbacks. Jacksonville should pick up the best option here and look for Derek Carr to fall to the second round or pick up another solid QB.
4. Cleveland Browns Johnny Manziel, QB Other Possibility: QB Teddy Bridgewater
Manziel didn't throw today at the combine and his statistics were solid enough to keep him here at No.4. Manziel still remains a player that can extend plays in magical ways and could bring fans to the seats in Cleveland, something they haven't had in a long time.
5. Oakland Raiders Sammy Watkins, WR Other Possibility: QB Teddy Bridgewater
The issues remain very much the same at Oakland where they have lacked a proven quarterback or receiver for years. Bridgewater could definitely be an option if he falls here but Watkins would give the offense the explosiveness they desperately need.
6. Atlanta Falcons Jake Matthews, OT Other Possibility: LB Khalil Mack
Injuries were the thing that helped kill the Falcons' season last year but the talent is there if they can stay healthy. Picking up Matthews will be critical as he would help Matt Ryan from getting injured, their recently signed franchise QB.
7. Tampa Bay Buccaners Khalil Mack, LB Other Possibility: LB Anthony Barr
Mike Mayock supported Mack in a big way saying he would select Mack if he were in the Texans' shoes. He does have that top-flight potential, he can impact ways as a pass-rushing linebacker and has the range and instincts of an NFL stud.
8. Minnesota Vikings Teddy Bridgewater, QB Other Possibility: CB Darqueze Dennard
Although he didn't throw or run at the combine Bridgewater is still a for-sure Top 10 pick. He may fall here to Minnesota but the Vikings desperately need a quarterback who can be a leader for a very young offense.
9. Buffalo Bills C.J. Mosley, LB Other Possibility: OT Taylor Lewan
With Mack off the board the Bills could look offensive line here, especially if Matthews or Robinson drops, but they should continue to improve a defense that has taken major steps the last couple of years. Mosley isn't the pass rusher Mack is but it is a leader who is a sure tackler.
10. Detroit Lions Darqueze Dennard, CB Other Possibility: WR Mike Evans
Other than Ndamukong Suh the Lions' defense is pretty average and they need a secondary that can stop Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers, along with the other elite quarterbacks in the NFC. Dennard is by far and away the best cornerback in the draft and a quick fix in the back.
11. Tennessee Titans Anthony Barr, LB Other Possibility: OT Taylor Lewan
When he is on his game Barr can take over games with his pass rushing ability, picking up sacks or just making the quarterback uncomfortable in the pocket. He still has to develop in other ways but Tennessee needs someone imposing like him on their defense.
12. New York Giants Timmy Jernigan, DT Other Possibility: CB Justin Gilbert
Could Jernigan be a stretch here for the Giants? Yes, but the Giants' defense has been lacking for years in run stoppers and Jernigan is just that. He has the strength and smarts to take over games at the next level.
13. St. Louis Rams Justin Gilbert, CB Other Possibility: WR Mike Evans
The Rams defense has some good pieces but their secondary was pretty inconsistent through much of last year and they have to deal with the great quarterbacks of the NFC West. Gilbert has excellent awareness and leaping ability and could make an impact in special teams as well.
14. Chicago Bears Aaron Donald, DL Other Possibility: S HaHa Clinton-Dix
Out of all the pass rushers in this draft it could be Donald with the most upside after the year he had at Pitt in 2013. Donald has the versatility to play a number of roles and could improve greatly if he gets stronger and quicker on the snap he can be dominant.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers Louis Nix, DT Other Possibility: DE Kony Ealy
Nix just fits the mold of a Pittsburgh Steeler defensive linemen. Nix is huge, at 6-2, 330 pounds and has the power to disrupt backfields constantly. He still has to improve in run support but the tools are there.
16. Dallas Cowboys Calvin Pryor, S Other Possibility: DE Kony Ealy
Although the run defense needs work as well the Cowboys' pass defense was porous throughout much of the 2013 season. Pryor has great size for a safety and has a great ball hawking mentality, he could shoot up boards.
17. Baltimore Ravens Mike Evans, WR Other Possibility: OT Taylor Lewan
Evans could shoot up boards as well and the Ravens need another playmaker for Joe Flacoo to work with, especially with Ray Rice's future now uncertain. Evans notched in with a strong 37" vertical and 4.53 40, impressive numbers.
18. New York Jets Eric Ebron, TE Other Possibility: WR Marqise Lee
Even tight ends can change games and Ebron did constantly while at UNC and should bring a lot of help to a New York offense that really needs it. He has great hands for a tight end and receiver's speed and route running ability.
19. Miami Dolphins Zack Martin, OT Other Possibility: OT Cyrus Kouandjio
It wasn't just the Jonathan Martin-Richie Incognito scandal that was terrible for Miami's offensive line, they allowed 58 sacks last year. Martin is a durable tackle who could anchor the line right away.
20. Arizona Cardinals Taylor Lewan, OT Other Possibility: DT Ra'Shede Hagemen
It is no secret why NFL scouts love Lewan; he has eye-popping size. At 6'7" and 310 pounds he could start from the beginning and he could be a steal here for the Cardinals.
21. Green Bay Packers Ra'Shede Hagemen, DT Other Possibility: HaHa Clinton-Dix
The Packers rush defense took a step back last year and passing on Hagemen here would be foolish. Hagemen has great size and athleticism and is from the area, playing at Minnesota.
22. Philadelphia Eagles HaHa Clinton-Dix, S Other Possibility: DE Kony Ealy
Clinton-Dix showed real potential while playing at Alabama and should give the Eagles immediate secondary help. He has great coverage skills and has proven he has great range.
23. Kansas City Chiefs Jace Amaro, TE Other Possibility: WR Odell Beckham
Maybe in a couple of years we might be calling Amaro the next Tony Gonzalez. He is a fantastic intermediate receiver who can be a security blanket for Alex Smith for years to come.
24. Cincinnati Bengals Kony Ealy, DE Other Possibility: CB Marcus Roberson
The Bengals already have a feared pass rusher in Geno Atkins but imagine their defense with Ealy who can help in run support as well and has the potential to be a star.
25. San Diego Chargers Kyle Van Noy, LB Other Possibility: CB Marcus Roberson
Van Noy proved constantly he was a defensive playmaker for BYU and could be the second straight highly-touted Cougar pass rusher (Ezekiel Ansah last year). He also has developed coverage abilities.
26. Cleveland Browns Cyrus Kouandjio, OT Other Possibility: WR Kelvin Benjamin

If the Browns are banking on Manziel being their franchise QB they are going to need him to stay healthy. Kouandjio had the upside to be a great tackle for years to come.
27. New Orleans Saints Dee Ford, DE Other Possibility: WR Kelvin Benjamin
Rob Ryan greatly improve the Saints defense last year but they still lack one obvious thing: an elite young pass rusher, something Auburn product Dee Ford could provide them with. Ford has an excellent motor and has NFL size.
28. Carolina Panthers Marcus Roberson, CB Other Possibility: CB Jason Verrett
The Panthers may need an improvement on their offensive line or another receiving option, but their secondary is a big issue as well and passing on a talent like Roberson will be very tough. Roberson has great athleticism and the potential to grow into a shutdown corner.
29. New England Patriots Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE Other Possibility: DL Stephon Tuitt
If Amaro and Ebron, the top two tight ends, are off the board by this point it will be very difficult for the Pats not to pick up Seferian-Jenkins who would be the top available option. Seferian-Jenkins is a stud from Washington with excellent hands and is developing as a decent blocker.
30. San Francisco Niners Jason Verrett, CB Other Possibility: CB Bradley Roby
The Niners have one of the best front sevens in the NFL but their secondary lacks a star and Verrett could be a late steal. Verrett proved to be a playmaker while at TCU and has the size and strength to develop quite nicely.
31. Denver Broncos Stephon Tuitt, DL Other Possibility: CB Bradley Roby
They didn't look like it much last year but the Broncos really missed Elvis Dumervil and really lacked a pass rush. Tuitt is massive, 6'5" 305 and with the physical tools to be dominant in a couple years.
32. Seattle Seahawks David Yankey, OL Other Possibility: OG Xavier Su'a-Filo
Seattle's offense was solid throughout 2013 and into the playoffs but consistency on the line was sometimes a question. Yankey is a smart Stanford product who can play either guard or tackle and can block the run very well.

College Basketball Power Rankings

1. Florida 25-2
With Syracuse losing their first games of the year this past week, the Gators could take the jump from No. 2 to No.1. Led by seniors Casey Prather and guard Scottie Wilbekin, Florida has the talent to roll through the extremely weak SEC.
2. Wichita State 29-0
It is time to start giving the Shockers the respect they deserve, considering they are the final undefeated in the entire nation. They have two games left, at Bradley and a home meeting with Missouri State, both should be wins.
3. Syracuse 25-2
Syracuse's luck finally caught up to them as the Orange dropped two close games this week, a stunning one to Boston College and a tough one on the road in a rematch with Duke. They still should continue to get great production from Tyler Ennis (5.7 assists per game) and versatile forward C.J. Fair.
4. Arizona 25-2
The Wildcats responded with two terrible games, a loss to Arizona State and a close victory over Utah with a thumping of Colorado. Junior guard Nick Johnson is still a Wooden Award candidate, averaging 16 points per game and although inconsistent, Aaron Gordon has really improved offensively.
5. Duke 22-6

Rodney Hood

Even though the Blue Devils suffered a rough rivalry loss to UNC, the Blue Devils got a big day from Jabari Parker and avenged a tough loss to Syracuse earlier in the year. Duke gets Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and then a big rematch with UNC where they will need Parker and Rodney Hood to take over.
6. Kansas 21-6
No performance was more convincing this Saturday than the Jayhawks' resounding win over Texas by 31, thanks in large part to Andrew Wiggins who had 21. If Wiggins continues to play to his potential and sophomore Perry Ellis also contributes the Jayhawks should be in serious conversation for a No. 1 seed.
7. Villanova 24-3
'Nova continues to roll through the Big East, dominating the average teams inside the conference. Though, it is still disturbing the Wildcats lost to Creighton twice by 20 plus and they are still yet to convince they are the best team inside the Big East.
8. San Diego State 23-3
The Aztecs had a disappointing loss to New Mexico, the only other real threat inside the Mountain West. San Diego State only managed 44 points and it shows the Aztecs may need another scoring threat outside of Xavier Thames and Winston Shepard.
9. St. Louis 25-2
The Billikens had a fantastic week, beating George Mason and bubble squad George Washington as they continue to fly under the radar. They have now won 17 straight but have perhaps their toughest stretch of the season coming up with meetings with VCU, UMass and Dayton coming up in early March.
10. Louisville 23-4
Ever since a close loss to Cincinnati on January 30th, the Cardinals have been fantastic winning six straight and getting vengeance against the Bearcats, hanging on to beat them on the road. Sophomore Montrezl Harrell has certainly picked up the slack for the dismissed Chane Behanan, averaging 13 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.
11. Cincinnati 24-4
Even with another great game from senior Sean Kilpatrick, the Bearcats fell just short against Louisville. Things won't get any easier with a three game stretch that includes UConn, Memphis and an upset-minded Rutgers team.
12. Creighton 22-4
The Bluejays responded from a tough loss to St. John's with wins over Villanova, Butler and Marquette and is in perfect position to win the Big East, which would be amazing considering it is their first year removed from the considerably weaker Missouri Valley.
13. Virginia 23-5
With Syracuse losing this past week twice, it was Virginia who benefited a lot, moving into first in the ACC. The Cavaliers have managed to go 14-1 inside the ACC without a very flashy team that just finds ways to win. If they can beat the Orange on March 1st they should secure the ACC's regular season title.
14. Michigan State 22-5
The Spartans have a huge Big Ten match up today with Michigan, as they hope to avenge a rivalry loss to the Wolverines in late January. Sophomore Gary Harris, the only Spartan who has managed to most of the year without injuries, has been great and the Spartans are really biding time until Adreian Payne, Keith Appling and Branden Dawson are full healthy.
15. Wisconsin 22-5
Bo Ryan's squad is starting to play like themselves again, winning three huge Big Ten battles over Michigan State, Michigan and Iowa yesterday. The Badgers are starting to find their offense again, putting up 70+ the last three, thanks in large part to the play of forward Frank Kamisky.
16. Iowa State 21-5
The Cyclones continue to be a pretty massive mystery winning big games one week and then responding with a bad loss. After losing by 25 and surrendering 102 to average West Virginia, the Cyclones have responded by beating Texas Tech, Texas and TCU. This Wednesday, they hope to get revenge against West Virginia at home.
17. Kentucky 21-6
It took all they could handle but Kentucky managed to sneak off with a victory over LSU yesterday with a game-winner from fabulous freshman Julius Randle. The 'Cats have an important game coming up with an Arkansas rematch, who beat them in the closing seconds of overtime with a putback slam.
18. Iowa 19-7
The Hawkeyes suffered a rough home loss to Wisconsin and now has an interesting stretch of Big Ten games upcoming. They get Minnesota, a team desperately needing impressive wins to get off the bubble and two teams they should beat in Indiana and Purdue.
19. Michigan 18-7
They may be cooling down, but the Wolverines still appear to be in good position in the Big Ten if they can come away with a win against Michigan State. Much like Iowa, the Wolverines next couple games are against teams they should beat which should help them gain momentum entering the Big Ten tourney.
20. UConn 21-5
The AAC's first year has been all about Louisville and Cincinnati but the Huskies are putting together an impressive year, getting fantastic years from senior guard Shabazz Napier (17.9 points per game and 5.5 assists) and junior DeAndre Daniels, 13.2 points per game and 5.4 rebounds.

21. Memphis 21-6
The Tigers had a pretty easy week with games against Rutgers and Temple, both wins. Senior guard Joe Jackson and sophomore forward Shaq Goodwin will help lead Memphis as they enter a brutal stretch with Cincinnati, Louisville and SMU upcoming.
22. Ohio State 22-6
It has been a tumultuous year for the Buckeyes but they could end the year on a high. The Buckeyes have won three straight and get two beatable teams in Penn State and Indiana before a huge match up with Michigan State.
23. UNC 20-7
No team has turned around their year like the Tar Heels have, who have won 9 straight since a 1-4 start inside the ACC. Sophomore point guard Marcus Paige has turned into a dangerous scorer off the dribble and UNC's bench has proven to be deeper than originally thought.
24. Texas 20-7
The Longhorns were putting together quite the season before a rough week this past week, losing to Iowa State and getting blown out by Kansas. Isaiah Taylor is having a great year and sophomore Cameron Ridley has turned into a monster in the post.
25. New Mexico 21-5
Quietly, the Steve Alford-less Lobos are putting together another strong season and are 21-5 and first in the Mountain West after a huge victory over San Diego State. Senior forward Cameron Bairstow is having a huge year, putting up 20.5 points per game while knocking down 56% of his shots.

In/Out For The Top Bubble Teams

Selection Sunday is inching closer, the day that many college basketball fans will either rejoice that there team is in the Field of 68 or take an early look at next season. As usual, there are a number of bubble teams and many residing from both the SEC and the Atlantic 10. Which of these bubble teams is going dancing and which ones are spending time in the NIT or no postseason tournament?

Missouri: The Tigers were in good position before conference play began, they were sitting at 12-1 and had some quality wins over UCLA and NC State. They are 6-6 inside the weak SEC but got a huge win this weekend over another bubble team, Tennessee in Columbia. The good news for the Tigers is that there next couple games are against favorable opponents. Vanderbilt, Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M all are beatable teams and they could get a big win before the season ends in the rematch against the Vols.

Tennessee: Cuonzo Martin has done a great job with Tennessee after taking over a program that
looked dead in the water after the Bruce Pearl scandal. Though, he has yet to get them to the Big Dance and it is going to be awfully tough to get them in this season. The Vols are 15-10 but have two good wins over Xavier and Virginia. Though, Tennessee has managed pretty well considering that they have the 10th hardest strength of schedule in the entire nation. Much like Missouri, Tennessee has a favorable stretch coming up with games against Georgia, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Minnesota: The Gophers looked to be in good position after a stretch in which they beat Wisconsin and Ohio State but they responded with two bad losses to Nebraska and Northwestern and sit pretty much on the bubble. They have some good wins and outside of Northwestern they don't really have any bad losses. The good news for the Gophers is that they will have junior guard Andre Hollins healthy for a stretch that will include meetings with Iowa, Ohio State and at Michigan. Minnesota would love a win or two in those three games but more importantly, they need to beat Penn State and Illinois, two teams they should beat.

Southern Miss: The Golden Eagles are a very odd team. They have an okay RPI of 43 and a 21-5 overall record but their biggest wins are against North Dakota State and Louisiana Tech and they have a very bad loss to UAB (RPI of 166). It is extremely tough for the committee to put in multiple teams from the Conference USA and Louisiana Tech is my favorite to win the conference. Senior guard Neil Watson needs to lead the Eagles to victories in their next five games, four of these teams have a RPI of 200 or higher.

St. Joseph's: The Atlantic 10 is constantly overlooked but it could put five or more teams into the NCAA tournament even without Butler and Xavier who are fighting in the Big East now. The Hawks are one of a number of bubble teams who are praying for a strong finish to the year. They have two quality conference wins over VCU and UMass, two teams that look like locks into the tourney. Their next two meetings should really help the Hawks, they get two weak A-10 teams in Fordham and Rhode Island.

California: Much of Cal's tournament hopes rest on their victory over-then No. 1 Arizona which took a hit when the 'Cats lost to Arizona State. The schedule for Cal the rest of the way is both an issue and a good thing. They have three tough games remaining in Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State. Beating these teams would help a ton but both Arizona matchups are on the road and will really test the Bears.

Oklahoma State: Just a couple weeks ago the Cowboys were in good position inside the Big 12 and looked nearly certain to sneak into the NCAA tournament. That was before Marcus Smart's suspension and before they lost seven of their past eight. The Cowboys have a big game tonight against fellow bubble team Baylor, the last game of Smart's suspension and have two good opportunities to snap their cold streak when they get TCU and Texas Tech.

How Larry Brown Has Changed SMU

Few universities in the entire nation have suffered through years of futility in basketball and football

like SMU. The football program, which quickly turned into a powerhouse in the days of the "Pony Express" was ruined by the infamous death penalty and is still recovering from it, three decades later. The basketball program hasn't made a tournament appearance since 1993, a first round loss to BYU. That is changing soon, under Hall of Fame head coach Larry Brown who has taken the Mustangs from a perennial joke in the Conference USA to a rising program in the first year of the American Athletic Conference. It is an odd story, a coach who has won 1,327 games in the NBA and 212 in college taking over a program that desperately needed a savior.

It appeared maybe the SMU basketball team was turning the corner in 2011 when the team appeared in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament and went 3-1 before losing in the semifinals to Santa Clara. The good vibes ended quickly and head coach Matt Doherty was fired after a 13-19 season that included a 4-12 conference record that meant finishing 11th in the C-USA. That offseason, the Mustangs made a bold move by hiring Brown who hadn't coached since 2010 with the Charlotte Bobcats and who is well-known as a coach that never stays in spot long. Brown's first year with the Mustangs brought mixed results. Although there were some bright spots in his first season, like Kansas State transfer Nick Russell, SMU still went a modest 15-17 and 5-11 in the C-USA.

This offseason it appeared like the tide was turning for SMU. Nearly everybody was set to return for the Mustangs including Russell who averaged 14 points per game in his first year with Brown and SMU. Brown parlayed his fame into a fantastic class bringing in the first McDonald's All-American in program history when he brought in guard Keith Frazier, a talent from the Dallas area. Along with all that add in transfer Nic Moore and a move to the fresh and more competitive AAC, Dallas was abuzz with the future of SMU. Even with all that talent coming back and coming in, few could have expected what the Mustangs have done this year. They sit at 20-5 and 3rd in the AAC at the moment thanks to a big year from Nic Moore and sophomore forward Markus Kennedy. They also have three wins over ranked teams this season, UConn, Memphis and Cincinnati. All of that equals the Mustangs being ranked No. 23 in the nation, the first that they have been ranked in three decades. A team that was very young and undisciplined when he took over the program, Brown has made the Ponies smarter and more efficient. His success this season has also led to another huge commit in point guard Emmanuel Mudiay, the No. 2 PG in the 2014 class. Mudiay is the first five-star recruit ever to sign with SMU and should be leaned on to run Brown's offense for the next couple years, assuming he isn't going to leave Dallas after one season.

What does the future hold for a program that has risen from the dead in just two years? This 2013-2014 team is very young at the moment and have the potential to turn into fantastic players. Frazier could continue his development and Mudiay will bring a scoring threat that SMU has never had before. Brown doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would like to stay and turn a program around. The thing is, he has already turned SMU into a team that could turn into a perennial threat for years to come inside the AAC. For years SMU has struggled and looked for someone to take them to the promised land. In less than two years on the job, Brown has already done just that.

College Basketball Power Rankings

1. Syracuse 23-0
The Orange keep on rolling with impressive wins this past week against Notre Dame and Clemson, and improving to 23-0. The depth on this team is amazing, so many guys are stepping up. Like when Trevor Cooney had a career day against Irish.

2. Florida 22-2
No team in the nation has as stingy as a defense as the Gators who are allowing an average of 57.9 points per game. Along with an offense that has seen big improvements from seniors Casey Prather and Scottie Wilbekin, Florida should continue their dominance of the SEC.
3. Arizona 23-1
Sean Miller's club dropped their first game of the season in a close loss to Cal, who followed that up by losing to Stanford. Junior guard Nick Johnson has turned into a true inside-outside scoring threat but the 'Cats are still lacking a consistent number two option. They need freshman Aaron Gordon to step up in big ways.
4. Wichita State 26-0

The Shockers are the first team since the Memphis team of 2007-2008 to start off the year 26-0. They have dominated the weak Missouri Valley thanks in large part to big man Cleanthony Early and sharpshooting guard Ron Baker. 

5. Villanova 21-2

The Wildcats are rolling on all cylinders lately and have improved to 10-1 inside the Big East. Junior forward JayVaughn Pinkston has turned into one of the conference's premier scoring threats and sophomore Ryan Arcidiacono is running the point at a tremendous level.

6. Duke 19-5
After some struggles to begin the season, the Blue Devils are starting to find their rhythm. Freshman Jabari Parker has been playing great on both sides of the ball, averaging 19.2 points per game, 8.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game.
7. San Diego State 21-2
20 straight is something to be proud of but the Aztecs suffered a rough loss, dropping their first conference game of the year and first overall game since November 14 against Wyoming. The play of Xavier Thames and Winston Shepard continues to lead the Aztecs to wins.
8. Michigan State 20-4
Injuries have put a damper on what could be a magical year for the Spartans but a healthy Adreian Payne means great things for Michigan State. With Payne, the Spartans have their best rebounder and scorer and a guy that can occupy the rest of the defense and open up space for their shooters.
9. Cincinnati 22-3
The Bearcats' 15-game win streak came to a stunning end when Cincy was upset by the upstart SMU Mustangs. Senior guard Sean Kilpatrick continues to play at an extremely high level, averaging nearly 20 points a game. A tough stretch comes at the end of February, when the Bearcats get UConn, Memphis and Louisville.
10. Kansas 18-6
Despite a very young roster and one of the toughest schedules in all of college hoops, the Jayhawks are still very much in contention in the Big 12 even after a tough loss to Kansas State. Andrew Wiggins has been more aggressive offensively and is getting to the rim, bad news for the rest of the Big 12.
11. St. Louis 22-2
Even after rising up to No. 12 in the latest polls, few people know anything about the Billikens. Their suffocating defense has been huge to their success along with the play explosive senior guard Jordair Jett. A tough test against VCU should give St. Louis their toughest test in months.
12. Louisville 19-4
Could this year's Louisville team be very similar to last years? Last years national title team started off 17-4 as well before getting hot and gaining the No. 1 overall seed in March. The Cardinals are getting excellent production from sophomore forward Montrezl Harrell and get a favorable stretch of games as they see Temple, Rutgers and South Florida next.
13. Michigan 18-6
The Wolverines got a huge rivalry win yesterday when they rode freshman point guard Derrick Walton's great game to a win over Ohio State. Walton is not the scorer that Trey Burke was but has run the offense efficiently and does a good job of getting the ball to Michigan's other playmakers like Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson.
14. Iowa State 18-5
The Cyclones got a rude awakening when West Virginia showed them up on the road, beating them 102-77, after the Cyclones had gotten three straight quality Big 12 wins. Senior forward Melvin Ejim has been absolutely dominant making highlight-reel dunks and beating teams up from mid range.
15. Kentucky 18-5
Kentucky has started playing better lately, winning six of seven as they head towards a meeting with Auburn. Julius Randle continues to be the Wildcats' stud in the paint but Kentucky continues to make mistakes which should be expected with a team full of freshman.
16. Iowa 18-6
The Big Ten's best continue to beat up on each other but Iowa has managed to survive inside the brutal conference. Senior Roy Devyn Marble has destroyed teams from deep all year and the depth on this team is very impressive.
17. Creighton 19-4
It is definitely looking inevitable that senior forward Doug McDermott will win the Wooden Award and the Bluejays continue to have a great year, sitting at 19-4 and in good position to win the Big East. Along with sharpshooter Ethan Wragge, Creighton looks to drown Villanova once again on the 16th.
18. Virginia 20-5
There are few teams in the nation playing as well as the 20-5 Cavaliers who are 11-1 since the start of ACC play and there one loss was a close one on the road against Duke. Senior Joe Harris is knocking down treys at an incredible rate and Virginia presents a stifling defense.
19. Texas 19-5
Rick Barnes should be in serious consideration for what he has done this year at Texas, keeping Texas in Big 12 title talks even with a roster that isn't much different from last year's disappointment. Their great backcourt of freshman Isaiah Taylor and Javan Felix can absolutely destroy defenses.
20. Wisconsin 19-5
After a freezing cold stretch in which they lost 5 of 6, the Badgers are starting to show some life again coming off a victory over Michigan State on Sunday. Sophomore Sam Dekker and seven-foot junior Frank Kamisky have had big years and continue to be their offensive focal points.
21. Memphis 18-5
The Tigers are also starting to find their rhythm again with a strong start inside the American thanks to a high-scoring backcourt with Joe Jackson and Missouri transfer Michael Dixon. Though, one stat is very worrying: in the Tigers' three conference losses to the best three teams inside the conference (SMU, UConn and Louisville) were all by double digits.
22. SMU 19-5
For the first time in decades, the Mustangs are ranked after two big wins over Cincinnati and Memphis. Sophomore guard Nic Moore has been a dangerous scorer all year for the Mustangs and Larry Brown has this team playing harder than they have in years.
23. Pittsburgh 20-4
One of the three newest members to the ACC, Pitt has been great and will look to knock off No. 1 Syracuse tonight at home. The play of do-it-all Lamar Patterson and senior big man Talib Zanna (12.5 points per game, 7.6 rebounds) has been huge for the Panthers.
24. Ohio State 19-6
The Buckeyes suffered a rough loss to Michigan but they are starting to find their offense again after a long stretch of one of the worst offenses in the Big Ten. LaQuinton Ross is playing well and guard Lenzelle Smith is starting to find his shot again.
25. UConn 18-5
Much of the success this year for UConn has been because of senior point guard Shabazz Napier who is leading the team in points, rebounds and assists. He needs another big game to give the Huskies a quality victory over Memphis.

NFL Mock Draft Edition 3

1. Houston Texans Teddy Bridgewater, QB
New head coach Bill O'Brien needs a smart, young quarterback to engineer his offense and the durable Bridgewater would fit his system much better than any other top QB prospect in this draft.
2. St. Louis Rams Greg Robinson, OT
It would be extremely tempting for the Rams to look at Manziel or Bortles here but sticking with Bradford would be the smarter decision for now. He needs better protection and Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson would keep him more comfortable in the pocket, protecting his blindside.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars Jadeveon Clowney, DE
It is very clear the Jaguars have lacked much consistency or talent at quarterback for years but a fierce pass rusher would work wonders for a defense that isn't necessarily great either. Clowney would give Jacksonville the disruptive force they need.
4. Cleveland Browns Johnny Manziel, QB

Johnny Manziel

The Browns need to win and win now. Durability is a huge concern for Manziel, considering his size, and he may not last as long in the NFL as others. But, he will bring immediate excitement and energy to an offense that has some at least one piece to work with in wide receiver Josh Gordon.
5. Oakland Raiders Sammy Watkins, WR
Oakland really missed on their last first-round wide receiver draft selection (Darius Heyward-Bey). If both Bridgewater and Manziel are off the board by this pick Watkins should be their selection if they want to improve their passing game, which has been atrocious for years.
6. Atlanta Falcons Jake Matthews, OT
As much talent as Atlanta has their offensive line proved to be a major issue last season. Matthews would help prolong the career of Matt Ryan by protecting his blindside and would help a run game that was nonexistent through much of 2013.
7. Tampa Bay Buccaners Anthony Barr, LB
Lovie Smith is a known defensive coach who needs a great group of linebackers to make his defense work. Barr is one of the best pass-rushers in this year's draft and would bring a player that Smith can coach up, he is just scratching the surface of his potential.
8. Minnesota Vikings Blake Bortles, QB
Perhaps no team had as terrible and weird quarterback situation as the Vikings did last year, constantly switching between Matt Cassel, Christian Ponder and Josh Freeman. Cassell will void his contract and likely go elsewhere meaning Minnesota needs a QB in this draft. Bortles would be a steal here.
9. Buffalo Bills Khalil Mack, LB
Playing in the MAC, Mack never got the respect he deserves but is a top-flight athlete. Along with second-year 'backer Kiko Alonso the Bills would possess two young linebackers with fantastic range and instincts.
10. Detroit Lions Darqueze Dennard, CB
The 2013 Jim Thorpe Award Winner, Dennard is by far the best cornerback in this draft and should definitely top the Lions' draft board. Dennard would give Detroit a physical corner to help a team that has struggled in defending the pass for years.
11. Tennessee Titans HaHa Clinton-Dix, S
Tennessee is an odd position here at No. 11. They need a quarterback or pass rusher but the best at all those positions are off the board. Trading away this pick could be an option here but if they keep it they should pick up Alabama product HaHa Clinton-Dix to improve an average secondary.
12. New York Giants Taylor Lewan, OT
The Giants' offense was terrible in 2013 and although it was a bunch of things combined together an improved offensive line would do wonders. Lewan isn't a complete tackle yet, but he is tough and has great size and will be tough for New York to pass up on.
13. St. Louis Rams Mike Evans, WR
Now that the Rams have addressed the clear issue of their offensive line they need to continue surrounding Bradford with talent. Evans is a true talent who can change games, making big plays on jump balls and deep balls.
14. Chicago Bears Louis Nix, DT
Chicago's rush defense was an obvious concern for them throughout much of last year and Nix would help fill some rushing lanes and also brings a monster who can provide some pass rush for a defense that needs it.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers Aaron Donald, DT
The once-proud Steel Curtain that is the Pittsburgh defense has grown old and needs some youth. Donald had a fantastic year for the Pittsburgh University Panthers and should give the Steelers a future pass-rusher.
16. Baltimore Ravens Kelvin Benjamin, WR
Baltimore's offense had a bunch of issues last season and Joe Flacco needs another reliable target in the passing game. Benjamin might be a little risky this high but his size and playmaking potential could make him a stud in a year or two.
17. Dallas Cowboys Kony Ealy, DL
Getting rid of Rob Ryan didn't really help the Dallas' defense; in fact they struggled even worse. The secondary was terrible last season but an improved rush defense should be the top priority. Ealy has the NFL size to dominate on the next level.
18. New York Jets Marqise Lee, WR
If the Jets really want Geno Smith to turn into a franchise quarterback they are going to need to surround him with some playmakers. Lee, who won the 2012 Biletnikoff, has the speed to change games and is lethal when healthy.
19. Miami Dolphins Cyrus Kouandjio, OT
Who knows what will happen with this Miami offensive line after the Jonathan Martin situation. Kouandjio has the potential to blossom into one of the best linemen in the NFL and do what Martin didn't; protect Ryan Tannehill.
20. Arizona Cardinals Zack Martin, OT
The Cardinals are in need of some more playmakers on the offensive end but their offensive line is an even bigger concern. Martin is a beast of a tackle that will bring an immediate impact to a line that could never protect Carson Palmer last year.
21. Green Bay Packers Justin Gilbert, CB
Green Bay's offense certainly can put up a lot points when Aaron Rodgers is healthy but their secondary still has some issues. Gilbert is a ball-hawking cornerback who also has the versatility to play some safety as well.
22. Philadelphia Eagles C.J. Mosley, LB
If Mosley drops all the way down here, it will be extremely difficult for any team not to take him. The Alabama linebacker is very smart and is tough and should bring a rangy linebacker to the Eagles' new look defense.
23. Kansas City Chiefs Eric Ebron, TE
The Chiefs definitely need some help in their passing game where Alex Smith lacked some consistent playmakers. Ebron is a very athletic tight end who can help the Chiefs stretch the field and open up rushing lanes for Jamaal Charles.
24. Cincinnati Bengals Jason Verrett, CB
Age is hurting the Bengals as Terrene Newman's career appears to be on it's last legs and Leon Hall is injury-prone. Verrett is a shutdown corner who has incredible athleticism and has proven he can be an interception machine.
25. San Diego Chargers Dee Ford, DE
Ford was a big reason why the Tigers' defense took huge steps this past season and could bring a much-needed pass rusher who has the experience and speed to help an inconsistent San Diego defense.
26. Cleveland Browns Odell Beckham, WR
Josh Gordon had a terrific 2013 season without any consistent quarterback but playmakers beyond him is a major concern. Beckham is a sure-handed option who should provide some reliable help for Manziel.
27. New Orleans Saints Ra'Shede Hagemen, DT
New Orleans' rush defense has been very exposed the past couple of years and Hagemen would really help. He has fantastic size and had a monster senior season with Minnesota and would really improve the Saints.
28. Carolina Panthers Calvin Pryor, S
NFL Defensive Player of the Year Luke Kuechly and the rest of the Carolina front seven are fantastic but the secondary was little spotty at times. Pryor is a fantastic, experienced safety who has proven he has fantastic coverage ability.
29. New England Patriots Jace Amaro, TE
The Pat's offense has always used tight ends very well but they are in a tough situation now with Aaron Hernandez gone and Rob Gronkowski always injured. Amaro is more of a receiver than a prototypical tight end who can find space anywhere on the field.
30. San Francisco Niners Timmy Jernigan, DT
Jernigan has the beast in the middle of Florida State's dominant defense and could play much the same role with the Niners. He could be extremely productive with Aldon Smith opening up lanes by occupying linemen on the edge.
31. Denver Broncos Kyle Van Noy, LB
Denver's offense was the big reason why they ran all the way to the Super Bowl but their defense wasn't very reliable last year after Von Miller's injury. Van Noy is a beast of a pass rusher who can make plays all across the field.
32. Seattle Seahawks David Yankey, OG
Marshawn Lynch is fantastic all by himself but if he gets even more help from his offensive line and guards he can be amazing. Yankey was incredible throughout his entire career at Stanford and should really help out Lynch.

National Signing Day Recap

The 2014-2015 college football season is still 6 months away but today we got a little taste of some of the future stars of the sport. Although a number of big name prospects were already committed today was still extremely important for a number of programs. As of today the top five classes in the nation are: Alabama, LSU, Florida State, Texas A&M and Tennessee, who signed a whooping 36 recruits.

Alabama once more had the best class in the entire nation, a popular theme in Tuscaloosca. The Tide managed to snatch up the number one offensive tackle Cameron Robinson prior and had a solid day landing great outside linebacker in Rashaan Evans who was considering a number of other SEC schools including arch rival Auburn. Defensive studs are a common theme for Alabama and they got a number of signings from guys who will be stars in a couple years and then go one to have successful careers in the NFL. Shutdown corner Tony Brown (No. 8 overall recruit, No. 2 CB), Marlon Humphrey (No. 15 overall, No. 5 CB) and Laurence Jones (No. 27 overall, No. 3 S) all make this class loaded with immediate contributors. Four-star quarterback David Cornwell, from Norman, Oklahoma, could compete right away from the QB vacancy left when A.J. McCarron graduated.

entire nation. Explosive athlete Speedy Noil can do a number of great things is exactly what his name indicates; a speedy, versatile option that can play a number of roles inside an offense. Defensive end Myles Garrett has the strength and fantastic instincts to be a top-flight SEC pass rusher in a couple years. Mixed in with the top quarterback prospect in all the nation, Kyle Allen, the Aggies possess a class that could be very important to them in a few years.

Last year, Ole Miss made huge recruiting waves when they signed defensive end/linebacker Robert Nkemdiche, the No. 1 overall recruit and offensive linemen Laremy Tunsil. It was very surprising for a program that had been floundering for years inside the SEC. This year the Tennessee Volunteers could easily be labeled "The Next Ole Miss." The Vols haven't had a winning season since they went 7-6 in 2009 under Lane Kiffin. Butch Jones had a decent first year in Knoxville winning five games and then having their best recruiting class in years. Explosive wide receiver Josh Malone is an in-state prospect who should be a scary vertical threat for the Vols from the start. The class is not extremely star-studded but has some real depth in it. Another pipeline snag was halfback Jalen Hurd, the No. 70 prospect and gigantic defensive end Dewayne Hendrix has the potential to be a real star. Along with Kentucky, who snatched up a Top 25 class in a lot of rankings, the SEC has two programs that really needs this recruiting class to make an impact now and in the future.

The real obvious thing that this recruiting class and whole signing day proved? The SEC does indeed dominate the recruiting and college football landscape, as if there was any doubt. Of the Top 10 classes in the nation, seven were from the Southeastern Conference. The only teams not from the SEC that managed Top 10 classes were Florida State, Ohio State and Miami. The SEC had more five-star prospects heading into it this year then the rest of the power conferences combined. And in a couple of years we will be talking about a number of those players going in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Not all of the best prospects in the nation are going to the SEC, there are other conferences out there. Michigan landed the No. 2 prospect in the nation in cornerback Jabrill Peppers who can be a factor on the offensive end and special teams is well. Defensive tackle Andrew Brown, the No. 5 prospect in the land, and safety Quin Blanding are two five-stars that Mike London managed to land at Virginia. And, the defending champs, Florida State, got even stronger with the addition of Miami back Dalvin Cook and speedster Ermon Lane.

College Basketball Power Rankings

1. Syracuse 21-0
The Orange managed to hold on to beat Duke at home in front of the largest crowd for a college basketball game ever. Senior C.J. Fair continues to take over in big games, scoring 28 points to carry 'Cuse over Duke. Along with the backcourt play of fabulous freshman Tyler Ennis (3.9 assist to turnover rate, 2.5 steals per game) and sophomore sharpshooter Trevor Cooney, Syracuse has the talent to win the ACC.
2. Arizona 21-0
As of me writing this, the Wildcats are 21-0 and will tip off against a dangerous California team in thirty minutes. Junior guard Nick Johnson has become a legitimate Wooden Award threat, leading the Wildcats in scoring with 16.7 points per game. Arizona doesn't have that difficult of a schedule remaining inside the Pac-12, this game against Cal tonight might be their toughest left.
3. Florida 19-2
Florida received a pretty late Christmas gift this week when freshman Chris Walker was finally

declared eligible to play. The 19-2 Gators are getting major contributions from career role-player Casey Prather and speedy senior Scottie Wilbekin, who is averaging nearly 2 steals a game. With the addition of Walker, Florida has another reliable scorer and offensive weapon to go along with Patric Young.
4. Wichita State 23-0
The undefeated Shockers were down 15 at one point to Evansville but used the play of Cleanthony Early to stay flawless. Early has had a tremendous year for the Shockers this year, averaging 16.3 points per game and 6.5 boards. A matchup against Indiana State on the road could be the biggest obstacle of an undefeated regular season for Wichita.
5. San Diego State 19-1
Steve Fisher managed to snatch up his 300th win of his coaching career today, leading the Aztecs to victory over Colorado State. San Diego State has won 18 straight games, and their lone loss this season has been to Arizona. Senior guard Xavier Thames continues to lead the Aztecs, who have impressive wins over Kansas and Creighton.
6. Villanova 19-2
After getting bombed by Ethan Wragge and Creighton's three-point assault, Villanova has recovered quite nicely, winning three straight Big East games. Senior James Bell continues to be Villanova's most reliable backcourt option and JayVaughn Pinkston has turned to be reliable in the paint.
7. Kansas 16-5
Although Kansas lost their first Big 12 game of the year with a tough loss to Texas in Austin but still have been playing great after some early struggles. Freshman big man Joel Embiid continues to dominate in the post, snatching 7.6 rebounds per game and nearly 3 blocks a game. Though, the loss to Texas proved if Andrew Wiggins struggles, the offense is not very effective.
8. Michigan 16-4
Perhaps no team is hotter right now than the Wolverines who are rolling through the brutal Big Ten. Sophomore Nik Stauskas should be the Big Ten Player of the Year if he continues his high level of play. Maybe the most impressive part of this Michigan team is Jordan Morgan and Jon Horford who have been playing fantastic in the absence of sophomore Mitch McGary.
9. Cincinnati 20-2
Any list of the hottest college basketball teams in the nation would not be complete without the Bearcats, who have won 13 straight and are rolling through the new American Athletic Conference. Sean Kilpatrick continues to make plays on the wing and managed 28 points in Cincy's pivotal win over Louisville.
10. Michigan State 19-3
The Spartans suffered a setback in a non-conference loss to Georgetown at Madison Square Garden. They are still playing extremely well even without star senior Adreian Payne and a very banged-up roster. Sophomore Gary Harris has definitely turned into the star that the Spartans have needed and Keith Appling continues to be the leader of the team.
11. Kentucky 16-5
Kentucky had a road setback against LSU despite freshman James Young's 23 points but responded nicely against a sneaky Missouri team. Julius Randle has been absolutely fantastic all year and is averaging a double-double with 16.1 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. If they can get some consistency from the Harrison twins the 'Cats are still a major threat.
12. Louisville Cardinals 17-4
The Cardinals' offense has been fantastic this year, putting up an average of 82.4 points per game. Junior Russ Smith continues to score on a consistent basis, putting up 18 points a game, but still taking a lot of dumb shots. Chane Behanan is now gone, meaning depth could be a concern for the Cards.
13. Oklahoma State Cowboys 16-5
A home loss to Baylor was definitely a wake-up call for Travis Ford's club who should have beaten the struggling Bears. Marcus Smart is doing it all for the Pokes, leading the team in points per game with 17.3 a game, rebounds and assists. Markel Brown is known for his stunning dunks but his game also has substance, with good touch around the rim and the athleticism to get to it.
14. Pittsburgh 18-3
Even with one of his least-talented teams in years, Jamie Dixon continues to produce at Pitt even inside the tough ACC. Lamar Patterson has been the focal point of the Pittsburgh offense, with 17.7 points and 4.5 assists per game. A win at home against a good Virginia team would be very important for the Panthers.
15. Iowa 17-5
The Hawkeyes got a solid victory on the road today against Illinois today but is opening a tough stretch against Ohio State and Michigan. Senior guard/forward Roy Devyn Marble has been great all year leading Iowa in scoring. Along with Aaron White and Melsahn Basabe, the Hawkeyes have a great frontcourt and the depth to compete in the Big Ten.
16. St. Louis 20-2
The Atlantic 10 has been an underrated league this year with some very strong teams with UMass, VCU and an interesting George Washington team. Even with those teams, the Billikens are 7-0 inside the conference thanks in large part to forward Dwayne Evans and reliable senior guard Mike McCall. The Billikens should still be weary, they still have VCU twice and UMass left on their schedule.
17. Wisconsin 17-5
A 16-0 start with victories over St. Louis and Florida has been overshadowed by an extremely difficult stretch. Sophomore forward Sam Dekker has been the breakout player people expected when the year began and senior Ben Brust has been a reliable option. But, their offense needs some more playmakers to compete in a great Big Ten.
18. Creighton 18-3
Senior Doug McDermott, the son of coach Greg McDermott, is looking the no-doubt Wooden Award winner and the Bluejays are looking like a real threat in the Big East. McDermott, who is averaging 25 points per game, draws defenders down low while senior Ethan Wragge drowns them with his three-point shot.
19. Iowa State 16-4
The Cyclones got a much needed victory over 23rd-ranked Oklahoma today but still look like a completely different team than the one that started off 14-0 and had wins over Iowa and Michigan. Marshall transfer DeAndre Kane has cooled down a little bit after a fantastic start but is still hurting teams from beyond the arc. This Monday night against Oklahoma State will go along way in proving what the rest of the year will look like for Iowa St.
20. Duke 17-5
Duke has been playing very well lately, winning five straight before falling tonight to Syracuse in overtime at the Carrier Dome. Jabari Parker continues be a real offensive weapon but the loss tonight to the Orange showed that the Blue Devils still really need another low-post option with him and Amile Jefferson.
21. Texas 17-4
Rick Barnes should be in serious conversation for what he has done with this Texas group. Even with a roster that isn't very talented the Longhorns are 17-4, took down Kansas today and are a real Big 12 title threat. Guards Javan Felix and Isaiah Taylor, a mere freshman, have been huge to Texas' success this year and must continue to stay healthy and play well.
22. Ohio State 17-5
The Buckeyes also started off the year on fire but have fallen apart lately due in large part to the lack of a go-to scorer. Junior LaQuinton Ross sometimes looks like he can be a big-time scorer but is not consistent at all. Senior Aaron Craft sure plays with a lot of heart but has struggled to make a big difference in Big Ten play yet.
23. Gonzaga 19-3
It should stand as no surprise to anyone that the 'Zags are once again ruling the West Coast Conference. Junior guard Kevin Pangos has been a great scorer this year and has cut down on his turnovers. With hard-working Sam Dower inside the Bulldogs have enough to work with to easily win the WCC.
24. Oklahoma 17-5
The Sooners' recent hot streak was halted with a road loss to Iowa State but they still are a real threat in the conference. Ryan Spangler, a Gonzaga transfer, has been a monster on the boards, averaging 10.1 boards per game with 3.4 of them being offensive. Senior Cameron Clark (16.5 points per game) gives the Sooners enough scoring punch.
25. Virginia 16-5
Despite a very pedestrian offense that is only averaging 67 points per game, the Cavaliers are 16-5 and are 2nd in the ACC. Senior Joe Harris has had a fantastic final year with Virginia and is shooting extremely efficiently. The Cavs are hoping their fantastic defense can carry them to a win in a huge ACC battle with Pitt.
