Murray State and Old Dominion Begin Madness

Earlier today the first round of the NCAA tournament got under way and already there have been a few upsets. No.4 Vanderbilt was just one of my sixteen teams moving to the Sweet 16 and took on Murray State in the first round. Vanderbilt's Jermaine Beal had 12 points and dished out 2 assists but is was the Racers Danero Thomas who hit the buzzer beater for a 66-65 win, just two of Thomas' 11 points. Murray State will now play Butler who beat UTEP 77-59.

Meanwhile, in the South region No. 6 Notre Dame played No. 11 Old Dominion in the first round. Notre Dame didn't start Luke Harangody who had just four points off the bech but it turns out they didn't need him as Ben Hansbrough put up 17 and 6 boards. But late in the game Old Dominion led 51-48. Notre Dame had a chance to tie it but Carleton Scott missed a three. Harangody put in the rebound but it wasn't enough as a team from the CAA took down the Irish of the Big East, 51-50.

2 Upsets In the Big East

Earlier today No. 10 Villanova took on unranked Marquette in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament. Marquette's Lazar Hayward played great in front of a large crowd in Madison Square Garden, scoring 20 points and rebounding the ball seven times. Villanova's starting five struggled as they needed Corey Stokes off the bench to score 22 but it still wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles took down 'Nova 80-76.

Also in the Big East tournament quarterfinals No. 3 Syracuse took on No. 22 Georgetown. Georgetown was led by guard Chris Wright who had 27 points and six assists and beat out the Orange's Wes Johnson's 24 points. Georgetwon was cold and is helped out by this win alot well the 'Cuse might fall out of a number one seed spot with the loss.

UConn Women Continue Domination

71 wins in a row is unreal for any team no matter which sport. Imagine Kansas, Syracuse, Kentucky or Purdue to win 71 games in stiff conference competition. That's exactly what the UConn women have done led by Maya Moore and Tina Charles. Not only has UConn beat teams like No. 2 Stanford and No. 7 Notre Dame they have won by large margins. Tonight against West Virginia UConn tries to go for number 72.

Bubble Watch: South Florida Bowls Over UConn, Notre Dame Inches Past, Louisville Takes Down No. 1

Yesterday was all about the Big East. In the final game in Freedom Hall, Louisville hoped they could steal their second win against Syracuse. Louisville was with out Jerry Smith for most of the game but bench player Kyle Kuric stepped up scoring 22 points and one steal. Syracuse's guard Scoop Jardine had 20, also off the bench, but it wasn't enough as Louisville stunned No. 1 Syracuse. Louisville (20-11) looks like they've punched a ticket to the NCAA tournament.

UConn entered the game against South Florida as one of the hottest bubble teams. UConn got off to an okay lead but South Florida's Dominique Jones had 20 points and the Bulls rolled to a 75-68 win. UConn got another solid performance from Kemba Walker who had 18 points. UConn really hurt their tournament resume with the loss.

Notre Dame faced Marquette in another bubble matchup. The Fighting Irish get Luke Harangody which is always good. Marquette had a three point lead late in the game until Carlton Scott (who had 14 points and 13 rebounds)nailed a three in a 63-60 win in OT for the Irish. Another big bubble win.
