Bowl Picks (Little Caesars to Holiday Bowl)

Little Caeasars Bowl: Western Kentucky vs. Central Michigan
This bowl might look like a snooze if not for the move Western Kentucky made a few days ago. The Hilltoppers, after Willie Taggart left for South Florida, hired offensive mastermind Bobby Petrino in the most controversial hire in this year's coaching carousel. He has a lot to work with including quarterback Kawaun Jakes who has a strong arm. The Chippewas also feature a great under the radar quarterback in Ryan Radcliff (2,905 passing yards). Whoever has a better game probably gives his team a win.
Western Kentucky, 27 Central Michigan, 20

Military Bowl: San Jose State vs. Bowling Green
Somehow the Spartans won 10 games this year and is ranked entering a matchup with Bowling Green. Oh, yes I remember why, they play in the WAC. The Spartans are still a quality team with a number of great receivers for David Fales. These include Noel Grigsby (9 receiving TD) and tight end Ryan Otten. Bowling Green isn't a flashy team but can win because of a steady approach to each game and consistent quarterback play from Matt Schilz. Though the Falcons rarely had to stop a player like San Jose State's end Travis Johnson who finished with 12 sacks this season. It could turn out a defensive struggle or maybe a shootout, but whatever it is it will be a good game.

Belk Bowl: Cincinnati vs. Duke

Cincy welcomes in a new era with new coach Tommy Tuberville after years of success with Brian Kelly and Butch Jones at the helm. He has a great team led by back George Winn who has good size and speed. The big question for the Bearcats is their quarterback position where Brendon Kay took over for the inconsistent Munchie Leagaux. Kay can execute against weak defenses and that is exactly what he is looking at against Duke. The Blue Devils were 6-2 at a point during this season before losing four straight. They have a strong offense with receivers Jamison Crowder and Conner Vernon. The history is in the Bearcats favor: Duke hasn't won a bowl since 1961.

Holiday Bowl: Baylor vs. UCLA
When you see this score you might think these two teams just finsished a basketball game. Both can score in bunches as Baylor has quarterback Nick Florence (4,121 passing yards) and Lache Seastrunk while the Bruins possess Brett Hundley, Johnathan Franklin and Shaq Evans. Hundley is a dual threat QB who Jim Mora has done a great job with. Baylor will get headaches trying to figure out whether he'll throw, run or hand off to the dominant Franklin. The Bears must protect Florence from Anthony Barr who led the nation in sacks.

Bowl Picks (New Mexico to Poinsettia)

Kadeem Carey, Arizona

New Mexico Bowl: Nevada vs. Arizona
Expect a high-scoring offensive showdown when these two meet in Albuquerque. Both use dual threat quarterbacks as Nevada has Cody Fajardo (981 rushing yards, 24 total TD) who can break open games. The Wildcats had tons of success under Rich Rodriguez because of quarterback Matt Scott's ability to extend plays and Kadeem Carey's rushing ability. Both can easily score 50 which means whoever plays better defense wins this game.
Arizona, 42 Nevada, 37

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Utah State vs. Toledo
The Idaho Potato Bowl might not be a flashy name but this might end up being a great game. The Aggies are underrated winning 10 games even one against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs who spent time in the Top 25. They have a great passer in Chuckie Keeton and know how to win in bowl games. Toledo meanwhile has a bunch of players that can change games including back David Fluellen and dangerous receiver Bernard Reedy (82 receptions, 6 TD). Don't expect either to destroy the other as this game could come down to the last minute.

St. Petersburg Bowl: UCF vs. Ball State
Expect a ground game battle in this one as both teams feature a thousand yard backs. UCF brings speedy Latavius Murray to the table who can score every time he touches the ball. Ball State, meanwhile brings sophomore Jahwan Edwards who averaged over six yards a carry. Though the Golden Knights powerful pass rushers could push them over Ball State.

Poinsettia Bowl: San Diego State vs. BYU
Two old Mountain West rivals square off once more in the Poinsettia. The Cougars quarterback Riley Nelson has had his fair share of troubles throwing almost as many interceptions as touchdowns so far this season. He has quite a receiver to throw to in Cody Hoffman who hopes to beat Leon McFadden and these great Aztec's defensive backs. Sophomore Adam Muena could have a huge game against a sometimes pedestrian rush defense of BYU. This game is basically a home game for San Diego State which could end up being the difference.

Bowl Preview: Dec. 22 to Dec.26

Las Vegas Bowl: (11-1) Boise State vs. Arizona State (6-6)
A hot start by the Sun Devils has fallen into a year of disappointment while the Broncos hope to win in a blowout in Kellen Moore's last game. Broncos coach Chris Peterson will have Moore passing like their is no tomorrow and for him their isn't another game. Brock Osweiler is big for the Sun Devils and can move around and he'll constantly have to do that with the Broncos rush running wild. Defensive tackle Billy Winn and Shea McClellan will put big hits on Osweiler. Can Cameron Marshall find his groove in this one. Hopefulluy or else this one could be a blowout in Las Vegas.

Hawaii Bowl: (11-2) Southern Mississippi vs. Nevada (7-5)
The Nevada Wolfpack didn't fall too much without Colin Kaepernick as two-quarterback attack and a two-back trio helped them claim 7 wins 5 coming in the WAC. The two QB set is headed by freshman Cody Fajardo and senior Tyler Lantrip both aren't dominant but they get the job done. They have a big time receiver in Rishard Matthews who had 91 catches and over 13 hundred yards. Though can the Wolfpack defense shut down a prolific Golden Eagles offense headed by their awesome quarterback Austin Davis who threw for 28 touchdowns. He is prone to making mistakes though. Ryan Balentine is a safety blanket for Davis and will have a strong appearance in this one.
Southern Mississippi, 35 Nevada, 30
Independence Bowl: (7-5) Missouri vs. (7-5) UNC
Considering all their problems entering this year the Tar Heels going 7-5 was a success. Both of these team's young quarterbacks produced solidly in their first year as starters as Missouri's James Franklin had 20 touchdowns with 10 picks and Bryn Renner from the Heels had 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Both teams aren't one sided as both have good defenses and effective offenses. The Tigers talented back, Henry Josey can do serious damage and is tough to take down. But the problem: he probably won't play. Though Franklin is a huge problem becuase he is a dual threat having rushing for 839 yards. That might end up being to much for the Tar Heels defense to handle as the Tigers improve to 8-5.

Bowl Preview 2011: Dec. 17 to Dec. 21

New Mexico Bowl: (8-4) Temple vs. Wyoming(8-4)
Both of these teams have different offensive strengths. The Owls have a strong ground game headed by Bernard Pierce. Pierce had 1,381 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns and gives the Owls a high scoring threat. The Cowboys meanwhile like to pass led by Brett Smith. Both defenses aren't stacked which will make it an interesting war. Pierce leads and upbeat Owls team past a weak Wyoming squad.
Temple, 35 Wyoming, 24
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Ohio(9-4) vs. Utah State (7-5)
I'm pretty excited for this one despite a first look at the Potato Bowl might not look that good. The Aggies should be 8-4 while Ohio should be 10-3 after leading most of the MAC Championship. Both offenses can score and could even possibly be a shootout. Bobcats quarterback Tyler Tettleton had a pretty prolific sophomore year passing for 3,000 plus yards and 26 touchdowns. Don't think Utah State won't keep it close as they have a fantastic back with Robert Turbin who had 1,416 yards and will get at least 20 rushes against Ohio. Though the Bobcats have a beast linebacker in underrated senior Noah Keller who will hope to hold Turbin. Ohio avenges disappointing MAC loss by killing Utah State.

New Orleans Bowl (8-4) San Diego State vs. Lousiana-Lafayette (8-4)
With the likely move to the Big East almost here the Aztecs hope to end their season with a win. Aztecs back Ronnie Hillman ended up having a dominant year rushing for 1,656 yards but they aren't one dimensional at all. Quarterback Ryan Lindley is no slouch and is efficient giving the Aztecs a strong offense. Lafayette doesn't get into bowls much so this year should be considered a success win or loss. Junior Blaine Gautier is smart and can play with anyone but San Diego State wins pretty comfortably.

St. Petersburg Bowl: (8-4) Florida International vs. Marshall (6-6)
FIU is making their first back to back bowl appearance for the first time in school history. Marshall is 6-6 and trying to take home their seventh win of the year. Both have strong aerial attacks but the Panthers should be worried about end Vinny Curry who will constantly pressure the quarterback. Senior Wesley Carroll will have to deal with it though in order to snatch a Panthers win. Marshall wide out Aaron Dobson made highlights for his awesome one-handed catch earlier this year but that wasn't his only catch as he made 41 more and was the Herd's leading receivfer.
Poinsettia Bowl: TCU (10-2) vs. Lousiana Tech (8-4)
For yet another year a good TCU team is stuck in a bad bowl. Though they'll face a pretty good Lousiana Tech team. Casey Pachall had an okay year replacing Andy Dalton but the Horned Frogs rely on a three-man running game with Waymon James, Matthew Tucker and Ed Wesley. The Horned Frogs defense is headed by two great linebackers in Tank Carder and Tanner Brock and will shut down a good Bulldogs running game.
TCU, 28 Lousiana Tech, 20

Who the Heck is Going to Win the Heisman?

Throughout the better part of the year the Heisman solution was pretty much a forgone conclusion. Andrew Luck, Andrew Luck and more Andrew Luck. Luck was leading an undefeated squad with not fantastic receivers and putting up big numbers while doing it. Then came the downfall as Luck struggled to preserve Stanford's perfect mark and the Cardinal slipped against Oregon. Now the list of candidates is almost endless. Robert Griffin from Baylor, Trent Richardson from Alabama, Montee Ball from Wisconsin, Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon from Oklahoma State head the top of the list with Luck. Griffin is a dynamic player who can run and pass for big yardage and his success with the Bears this year will help him. Trent Richardson is a speedster who is tough to stop but questions have emerged about if he can perform against top notch teams after a rough LSU game. Ball scores touchdown after touchdown but isn't really considered a true contender though he'll earn some talk. Weeden once looked like the front runner but his rough game against Iowa State likely dashed his chances. Justin Blackmon is fantastic and fun to watch but of course wide receiver isn't a very Heisman worthy position. And finally Luck, the smart and hard-working NFL prospect. Kellen Moore and Case Keenum have the stats but they needed their respective teams to go undefeated to win. Now with both at one loss they're done. So now you first-hand see how many good candidates are going to be looked at not to count the others which I didn't include. But I really don't see a Baylor quarterback winning the award. Luck wins with Richardson a close second because they play on big time television and do it with surrounding players not fantastic.

Week Two Report

Few knew who Melvin Ingram(6) was before his impressive game against Georgia.
The only ranked match up this week Alabama looked good against Penn State. The Crimson Tide still aren't confident about A.J. McCarron at quarterback but they'll still win games with the guys surrounding him. Nebraska didn't dominate Fresno State, in fact, it was pretty close. I don't think the Cornhuskers deserve the ten spot just yet because I think they need to figure out a little bit more on offense. A huge kickoff return sealed the win for the 'Huskers 42-29. Originally I thought Wisconsin should have been on upset alert when they played Oregon State but they routed them from start to finish. The ground game looks just as strong even without John Clay but I'm still worried about their defense which looked horrible week one against UNLV. Shutting down a sneaky Beavers team helped silence some critics about the defense. After getting shoved down by the LSU Tigers Oregon played angry against Nevada running up the score in the 69-20 domination. Darron Thomas stated his Heisman case by passing and running for touchdowns time and time again. Though a tough Pac 12 looms in the distance. South Carolina's win over Georgia proved they will be a formidable opponent in the SEC. The MVP had to be the defensive tackle Melvin Ingram for the Gamecocks who ran for a touchdown on a trick play, recovered a fumble for a touchdown and gained the key offside kick. Auburn dropped out of the Top 25 after sneaking a win against lowly Utah State but will likely get back in after deating Mississippi State, 41-34. Michael Dyer had a strong performance as the Tigers restart their BCS title chase. Arizona State has commonly been called a dark horse and after defeating 21st ranked Missouri they showed that they likely will be. Texas sneaked out a 17-16 win over BYU but they still have a lot of problems to fix. The defense looked okay against Jake Heaps and the Cougars but Garrett Gilbert and the offense looked flat. The Notre Dame-Michigan game was probably the craziest game I have ever seen. After what looked like Notre Dame's game Michigan fought back and scored late. At this point with the lead I thought the Wolverines had the game but after Tommy Rees led the Fighting Irish to a touchdown I changed my thought. But Denard Robinson and Junior Hemmingway led the Wolverines deep into Notre Dame territory. Star wide out Roy Roundtree's catch was the game-winner. Notre Dame starts season 0-2 and desperately needs a win.

Week Two Predictions

12 South Carolina vs. Georgia Prediction: South Carolina, 31 Georgia, 27
How to Beat South Carolina: Make them one-dimensional, make them run the ball. Marcus Lattimore isn't very speedy so blitzing will keep him in the middle. With Devin Taylor and Jadevon Clowney on the other you can't get out of the pocket without them pressuring you so stay in as much as possible.
How to Beat Georgia: Gaining big yards on the ground was an important to the Bulldogs gaining points against Broncos so get on the side and try to contain their dynamic backs. The defense didn't look great against Boise State so it shouldn't be too much of a problem scoring. The special teams is great with punter Drew Butler and kicker Blair Walsh so don't expect much easy plays against it.
Utah vs. USC Prediction: Utah, 27 USC, 20
How to Beat Utah: Jordan Wynn has great legs so you have to contain him. Making the Utes pass the ball will help since they prefer the ground game. Robert Woods dominated in his first game for the Trojans so look for him as much as possible.
How to Beat USC: If you cover Woods like a blanket and make Matt Barkley look around for other options he won't be able to do as much damage. The Trojans secondary is strong with safety T.J. McDonald and Nickell Robey so avoid it as much as possible be running the ball.
3 Alabama vs. 23 Penn State Prediction: Alabama, 24 Penn State, 16
How to Beat Alabama: Both quarterbacks are obviously not experienced so they won't be very effective on the road against a tough Penn State team. The secondary is stacked and Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower are beasts in the middle.
How to Beat Penn State: Rob Bolden is a dual threat but he is not necessarily a passer so making him pass will cut down yardage. Silas Redd had a strong first game and shutting him down will be important. Running up the middle with Trent Richardson will gain yardage.
16 Mississippi State vs. Auburn Prediction: Mississippi State, 38 Auburn, 30
How to Beat Mississippi State: The Bulldogs have a skilled and experienced secondary so running the ball will be more effective. Chris Relf doesn't have the best arm so testing his accuracy and arm will help.
How to Beat Auburn: Of course they have a young and first year quarterback in Barrett Trotter so making them throw will force turnovers and make three and outs. The teams defense, especially the line is recovering so you can stay in the pocket for a while.

Predictions for College Football Games: Week One

3 Oregon vs. 4 LSU Prediction: Oregon, 38 LSU, 27
How to Beat Oregon: Force deep throws. Darron Thomas doesn't have a great arm and Jeff Maehl is gone meaning the Ducks don't have a go-to receiver. Run the ball also. Casey Matthews and Kenny Rowe are gone in the front seven so you can gain a lot of small yardage through out the game.
How to Beat LSU: Make them prove that they can throw the ball. Whether Jordan Jefferson or Jarrett Lee's the starter the Tigers don't have a great passing game. Throwing for effective short passes will beat Morris Claiborne and the rest of the secondary.
5 Boise State vs. 19 Georgia Prediction: Boise State, 28 Georgia, 21
How to Beat Boise State: Cover the wide outs as close as possible. Kellen Moore is accurate but isn't as strong with the deep ball. Throw the ball as much as possible. The secondary is the Broncos' defense weakest link so some big gains in the air would help.
How to Beat Georgia: Pressure Aaron Murray quite a lot. He is still young and every young QB won't make great decisions under pressure. Make him move out of the pocket and throw the ball. A lot of effective 8 to 11 yard passes will weaken the Georgia defense.
South Florida vs. 16 Notre Dame Prediction: Notre Dame, 31 South Florida, 17
How to Beat Notre Dame: Double-team Michael Floyd. Other then Floyd Notre Dame's options aren't very strong. Make Dayne Crist spread the ball around as much as possible. Deep passes will help significantly due to the fact that the Fighting Irish have a weak secondary.
How to Beat South Florida: Make B.J. Daniels stay in the pocket. He is much more effective when he can move around on the run and make throws. He is also effective by scrambling. Power-up your offense. Pass and run the ball confidently. The Bulls defense isn't very great.

The BCS

Time too sack the BCS now with Boise State losing. I have always been in favor of a tournament. It works in Division II and in college basketball. Now, their is absolutely no chance that anybody but Oregon and Auburn make it in. TCU gets left out again and just because they lost to a good team in overtime Boise falls to probably a Poinsettia Bowl appearance. And, I still don't think Auburn is good enough to play with Oregon in the championship game. They've been in a number of close games including Alabama and LSU both I believe to be overrated. We all know if something happens to Cam Newton the Tigers wouldn't have close to the same record as they do now. Oregon has killed some teams but only comes alive in the second half. That doesn't necessarily hurt them, they're still winning. Arizona and Stanford top their undefeated records. TCU destroyed Utah and is still undefeated and just like Boise they are blowing out oppenents. Plus the Horned Frogs destroyed Baylor 45-10 who ended up beating Texas who beat Nebraska.

Names You Need To Know For College Basketball '10-'11

The college basketball season has already started but here are the rest of the names you need to know when the season finally gets going big time:

The High Profile Stars
Jacob Pullen, Kansas State, Senior The lightning to Denis Clemente's thunder, or maybe the other way around. Now the senior stud takes even more of a role with no more Clemente. He has great vision and can shoot the ball effectively. Don't let that fool you: he can go hard to the basket.
Kyle Singler, Duke, Senior Key to the Blue Devils postseason run Singler returns as the number one option on offense with the loss of Jon Scheyer. Singler might be a Gordon Hayward type of guy-someone who's big but can shot like a guard and dribble like a guard. Don't be surprised if Singler guides Duke back to the title game.
Under The Radar Sensations
Joey Rodriguez, Virginia Commonwealth, Senior Over the years Rodriguez has been key to Virginia Commonwealth's domination over the CAA. He returns after solid numbers in scoring (12.9 ppg) and assists (5.8 apg).
Troy Gillenwater, New Mexico State, Junior The potent Gillenwater does it all for the Aggies: he scores(14.6 ppg in '09-'10), rebounds(6.8 rpg) and can block shots(1.3 bpg). He is one of the top returning players out of the WAC.
The Freshman Powerhouses
Harrison Barnes, UNC, Freshman This hard worker from Ames, Iowa is one of the key reasons that the Tar Heels are ready to get back to the top. Barnes, who was finally won by Roy Williams a few months ago reminds me of John Wall: an explosive presence who is a decent ball handler and can change the game with one play.
Jared Sullinger, Ohio State, Freshman The Buckeyes do return F-C Dallas Lauderdale and recruited F DeShaun Thomas but Sullinger will get the thick of playing time inside. Through the first two games though they were pretty much cupcakes Sullinger has fulfilled the promise by averaging 22.5 points per game.
The Cerebral Coaches
Tom Izzo, Michigan State I guess you could call him smart for no going to the NBA. Izzo has turned the Spartans into an every year Big Ten contender to an every year national title contender. His calm presence in the face of controversy is amazing: with a five seed and injuries galore he lead Michigan State to another Final Four appearance last season.
Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Sure you could argue a lot of coaches have done a lot more than this guy(Hello Coach K and Roy Williams) but you could argue that the reason the Orange surprised everyone is because of this man. His good defense-leads to good offense has always impressed me.
The Sleeper Programs
San Diego State Aztecs The Aztecs are a strong favorite to win the Mountain West this season. Not only that they could advance far into the Big Dance. They have a smart player in Billy White who isn't the biggest but can hang and sophomore Kawhi Leonard who was great in his freshman year could be even better this year.
Dayton Flyers Dayton is building a home in the NCAA tounrmaent. They always consistent team returns three key forwards- throw-it-all-down Chris Wright, effective Josh Benson and bruiser Chris Johnson- enough to win them the A-10 over others like Temple.

A Closer Look At College Basketball

Don't be surprised if it's another Butler-Duke title game. Both return a strong team- for Duke it's led by Nolan Smith and Kyle Single for Butler it's Matt Howard and Ronald Nored. . .Syracuse doesn't too push the pace in order to win. They have many options inside with Kris Joseph, Rick Jackson, Mookie Jones and new recruit Fabricio de Melo. . .Even though they both lost two key players Nevada and Utah State in the WAC should not be overlooked. Three key returning starters might mean another WAC crown for the Aggies. . .If anything the loss of Robbie Hummel means the Boilermakers will contend. . .next season. Still don't count out Purdue, they still have E'Tuwan Moore and JaJuan Johnson. . .I think many teams are overrated in the first poll. 14 Baylor lost Ekpe Udoh and Tweety Carter and also lost LaceDarius Dunn for the season. I guess high recruit Perry Jones makes people think the Bears will contend. Plus, with the loss of Matt Bouldin who does Gonzaga have?

My Early BCS Solution

It's been another crazy year. Their have been few teams that have stayed consistently at the top. Auburn is ranked number one because of their wins over Arkansas and LSU, both impressive. They play Alabama later this year, who is still in the title talks but must win this game. And I think they will which pushes the Tigers out. Whoever wins this weekend between TCU and Utah will help a little bit. But both don't have great resumes. If TCU does end up winning though they could sneak in. Oregon doesn't have alot to worry about to end the season except for Arizona which I think they can win. That probably puts them in. Don't count Boise State out. They beat Oregon State more impressively than TCU, beat Virginia Tech who is rolling and I think they can win over Hawaii and Nevada, their two biggest challenges to end the season. Nobody else looks like they can challenge. Utah maybe but Ohio State lost, same goes for Michigan State, and I just don't see Missouri or Oklahoma getting in. Basically I have Oregon playing Boise in the BCS Championship Game.

Weekly Report

Michigan State proved they were real when they beat down Wisconsin or did they? That close win over Arizona State didn't make me feel reassured about the Badgers. Nobody can stop 'Bama. They beat Arkansas and Florida, two of the teams who actually have a realistic to make a BCS bowl. Don't count Mark Ingram out for the Heisman again. When healthy he has been unstopaable including the wins over the Gators and Razorbacks. Boise State shouldn't have been as worried against Oregon State and Virginia Tech as they should be facing Nevada. With Colin Kaepernick and the pistol offenese the Wolfpack are tough to beat. Other than Oregon the Pac 10 is wide open. This weeks game Stanford vs. USC will help. And with Arizona stomping all over you have three teams who have a legit shot at the Pac 10 championship. Oregon State and Washington are also bubble teams. Bo Pelini has two quarterbacks Taylor Martinez and Zac Lee but that's not the only reason they will win the Big 12. Niles Paul has had a big season and will continue it.Kansas State is also a possible sleeper with explosive back Daniel Thomas.
